What if we only understood later which story really mattered?
There was something about 2000s rom-coms that feels rarer now. They let themselves be sentimental without constantly undercutting every emotion with cynicism.
What I love about these films isn’t really the usual “they meet, something keeps them apart, they end up together.” It’s time passing. People grow up, miss each other, find each other at the wrong moment, change their lives, head off in different directions. Somewhere along the way, their love stories become the thread running through their coming-of-age years.
And then there’s the aesthetic I love: the music, flip phones, the clothes, film photos, New York, seasons changing, scenes that take their time. Characters allowed to be awkward, a little foolish, deeply romantic — without having to explain every emotion.
Three films, three ways of telling almost the same story: time, chance, and the people we never quite manage to forget.
